Hanging Cage Thing Sunday, Aug 3 2008

1 August 2008
Outdoor cage-type thing; it hangs over the birdbath in the front yard. It’s one of the many acquisitions that my wife has made that, although it makes the front yard beautiful, I have no idea what its true purpose is.
Cage Thing
Cheers.

Reflection in a Gazing Ball Saturday, Dec 15 2007

8 December 2007
A Saturday. Hoorah. Despite a few emotional bits, I did manage to get out of the house. At least as far as the front yard.
Tree Reflected in Gazing Ball with Leaves
Yep, that's just a decoration in the front yard. It sits in a garden area under a big Black Oak. It's pretty.
Cheers.

On Which I Trod Wednesday, Dec 5 2007

18 November 2007
Feeling better. Not good by any stretch, but better. Enough better in fact to go outside and take this photo:
On Which We Tread
The photo assignment for that week was "On Which We Tread" which I think is a darned clever way to get all of us to take a moment and looksee what we're walking on. I can tell you, I rarely look down to see what's at my feet. Perhaps it's because I can't really see my feet if I look down right now…but that's fixable. Also, it's an interesting look at what we call "Fall" here in North Texas. Yep, brown leaves on green grass. One day all those leaves were on the oak tree overhead; the next day they were strewn upon my lawn having turned brown and fallen overnight. Yep, fall in Texas. It goes by very quick.
Cheers.

Guarding the Garden Thursday, Oct 25 2007

12 October 2007
Still playing with the new camera before heading over the pond. This is an early morning photo of a gnome that keeps one of our gardens safe. I grew up with these little guys in Germany, and my wife loves to have them around. I guess they'll just always be part of my life. I'm good with that. This one actually sits against our neighbours house watching out over our front lawn He's always a welcome sight.
The Gnome
Cheers.

Green Sun Monday, Sep 24 2007

23 September 2007
Got up and hosted the conference call this morning as my boss headed south to a UT game. I then watched an absolutely marvelous Arsenal side demolish newly-promoted Derby in what essentially turned into an exhibition game at the Emirates. Quite a fun match. Following that was a trip to the store for the much-dreaded, yet anticipated, laptop purchase for MB. We settled on the computer she wanted and took it home. I then spent several hours configuring it while she went to her crop party (I'm not so into scrapbooking). After taking the configuration as far as I could without her, I took further advantage of her love for scrapbooking and indulged my love of movies. I went to see the third installment of a franchise that should have stopped after the first one. Resident Evil: Extinction, although better than the second movie is not really worth your time. Unless, that is, you just love to look at Jovovich. So, on my way out the door, I snapped this photo of the sun as seen through a green glass bauble hanging from the front porch eve:
Green Sun.
And, that is all she wrote.
Cheers.

Up a Tree Friday, Aug 24 2007

23 August 2007
This day was done. I was done. Completely shattered and not wishing much in the way of company. I was nearly relieved when Terrill decided not to join me at the bar (that doesn’t happen very frequently). With no company, I decided to go home and spend a quiet evening at the house. I pulled into the driveway, got out of my little Mitshubishi and walked to this massive Black Oak that resides in my front yard. I placed the camera against the bark and shot upward not even bothering to compose. I took four shots that way, moving the camera a little each time to achieve a different view. I like this one:
Up a Tree
It sort of composed itself with the ivy moving to a vanishing point that exists at about the spot that the overhead branches diverge. I might very well have even composed the shot that way. On the left hand side there is a fuzzy little blur. That is a web-worm, or tent-caterpillar, or whatever you call those vile little parasites. I killed it.
Cheers.

Front Yard Decoration Friday, Jul 13 2007

11 July 2007
Decoration in the Front Yard
This is a candle holder. It stands in the front garden next to a bench. In the Spring and Fall, when I’m not melting every time I go outside, we will sometimes stick a “bug-away” candle in there and sit in the front yard. It’s not often, because those bugs really, really like me, and I really, really, really don’t like them. So, I tend to not spend an abundance of time in the yard; this is much to my wife’s chagrin, I feel I should add.
Cheers.

The Cone Flower Tuesday, Jul 10 2007

10 July 2007
I should’ve known what kind of day it was going to be when I took my first step outside the door this morning and almost immediately dropped my coffee cup shattering the lid and spilling coffee all over everything. Frustrating. The rest of the day was spent trying to debug and isolate badly written code and get some routes submitted.
Not to be completely dissuaded however, by the coffee-cup incident, I went ahead grabbed my camera and took the photo that I had intended to take this morning. Cone Flower
We have several beautiful cone flowers that have been flourishing in our front garden for a number of years now. Most recently we’ve had, what the media termed a Web worm attack, although I believe they were actually tent caterpillars rather than web worms. These so-called web worms, destroyed all of the softwood foliage in both front and back yards and all of the neighboring houses; including the cone flowers. This beautiful one however, somehow survived. The brilliant orange and pink on a background of green just really spoke to me and I decided to use it as is the photo of the day. I took other photos of the coneflowers, but typical of the way the day started, the first couple of photos were obscured by this crazy layer of condensation that had formed on the camera lens when I stepped outside. I was dealing with near 100% humidity on an 80 plus degree day making it pretty darn miserable, but it did lend a really nice soft focus filter quality to the image. I’m now home to spend some time with the dogs, and to change clothes before I head back out to a bar to join some friends of mine. You see, it is after all, dollar beer night.
Cheers.

Sunlight on Flowers Friday, Jun 15 2007

13 June 2007
One of Marita Beth’s great solaces is gardening.  I love it because she creates a beautiful environment that I get to come home to every day. This Wednesday, the 13th, the sun was breaking through clouds and creating rich shadow and deep light on things. The front garden (which is soon to undergo a massive change) caught my eye and I took a number of photos. I settled on this one:
Sunlight on Flowers
The yellow flowers dangling over the daisy stepping stone composition I liked best.
Cheers.
