Pencil Sharpener Saturday, Jan 10 2009

9 January 2009
I tend, when on vacation, to buy souvenirs for others not myself. I content myself with the informational booklets picked up at historic places, beer mats obtained at bars to satisfy my tegestological urges and photographs. However, in the gift shop of the Radisson Edwardian in London I saw a miniature red British phonebooth pencil sharpener.
Iconic
Long before Flickr was even a dream, and digital cameras were far from the norm, I took a trip to the U.K. On that trip, my photos were concentrated around this particular British icon. Since then, I have received British phone boxes in numerous forms from friends and family. I suppose I could almost be considered a collector of them. So, when I saw this utilitarian pencil sharpener, I just had to buy it for myself. Now, it sits on my desk next to my laptop.
Cheers.

Thumbdrive Thursday, Dec 4 2008

4 December 2008
I do my fair share of travelling and when I do travel, I travel with my laptop. In conjunction with that travelling comes work – both self-induced and thrust upon me. With that work comes the necessity for a sandbox in which I can develop willy-nilly. Thus today’s photo:
Thumbdrive
This is my Kensington 2GB thumbdrive that I have had for nearly 5 years. It lives on my carabiner keychain and goes with me everywhere my keys go (darn near everywhere). It has numerous important developing tools that I use on a nearly-daily basis and allows me, even when I have no internet connection to develop fully functional web applications and sites.
Cheers

Stack o’DVDs Monday, Nov 24 2008

21 November 2008
Day of work followed by a long drive to TRF. Google maps says it’s 214 miles and takes 4 hours & 23 minutes. My odometer says it’s 208 miles, and it only takes 3 and 1/2 hours (not scientifically proven nor sound).
My plan this weekend was to be there, but not really there – I was going to work on websites all weekend. Because of that, I took a stack of favourite movies to watch
Stack o' Movies.
You know, movies you’ve seen so many times you don’t really have to watch, but that provide companionship & noise when you desire it? Those kinds of movies.
Cheers.

Handwriting on Graph Paper Saturday, Nov 22 2008

20 November 2008
Notes taken on a scrap of graph paper
Handwritten Notes
The day, like every other friggin’ day this week, was long, tedious and frustrating. But, like the good little drone bee that I am, I keep on doing my job to the best of my ability. After work, I stopped at Rob’s for a beer, played some pool then went home to my lovely wife where we spent a couple of hours together in the living room. She did some hand-sewing and kind of watched the telly while I completely tuned out my world and lived in the faux-spy world offered up by Chuck, then in the politically incorrect world of Bill Maher. I went to bed soon after that where I had completely dreamless sleep.
Cheers.

Lunch Friday, Nov 21 2008

19 November 2008
The joys of a week full of Mondays. It seems like every day is a repeat of the frustrations of the previous day…and every one of them feels like a Monday.
The joy of the work day yesterday was my Breaded Pork & Mashed Potatoes I snagged from the cafeteria
Breaded Pork & Mashed Potatoes
and kicking ass at Wordpaths on Facebook. Such simple things.
After work, however, was happy hour & massive political discussions at Broncos with some very dear friends.
Cheers.

Panes for Larry Friday, Nov 7 2008

Panes for Larry

6 November 2008

I finally remembered to take the camera to the workshop!  And I’m glad I did, not just because Larry wants to see his fabric on the KRuMB, but because Artemis chose to come out and remind me when it was bedtime, and she was darned cute!

What I was originally setting out to photograph was the beginning of the panes-building for Larry’s new slops.  At the bottom of my photo is the one finished one.  I’d be done with all of them by now, except that I decided they needed beads.  <sigh>  I promise this is but the first of many photos of this project in progress.

Battery Butts Thursday, Nov 6 2008

3 November 2008
A stack of 7.4v 2200mAh LI-ION batteries on my desk.
Battery Butts
I became an analyst for a change of pace from the hum-drum day-in, day-out of programming. It seems, most days, however, that I’m just a glorified shipping manager with a snazzy title. When the hardware fails in the field, I’m their first call, never minding the fact that we have a trained call center that is designed to be the first line. Sometimes, I’ll even just get boxes showing up with dead or dying hardware in them. I guess it’s part of my job to deal with it, but it makes a mess on my desk.
Cheers.

Wife, Cat, Computer, TV & a Sweater Tuesday, Nov 4 2008

30 October 2008
My wife, friends & colleagues threw me a birthday party this evening. We gathered at Rob’s Billiards to drink, socialise, play pool & eat. Food was provided by friends from work, beer was flowing freely (as was the bourbon later on) and the pool game steadily deteriorated as the evening wore on. 🙂
Through all of that, I neglected to take a photo. Even still, I managed a snapshot of "life at home" that I like.
Wife, Cat, Sweater, Laptop & TV
This is my wife sitting next to my wife’s cat who is laying on the sleeve of my earlier discarded sweater. My wife is pointing to our website on her laptop while watching something on the telly. Maybe not completely indicative of the day in general, but certainly a peek into "a day in the life of".
Cheers.

Hallowe’en Tuesday, Nov 4 2008

28 October 2008
I’m kind of a curmudgeon. No, really, it’s true. I’m not really overly fond of kitschy or cutesy things and I’m definitely not fond of crass over-commercialised holidays. So, when we started seeing things like this
Halloween Bling
a number of years ago, I shuddered inwardly. How could they? How could they take my holiday and turn it into something cute? But, the entrepreneurial element in me has since taken over. I no longer shudder & shake at the sight of silly decorations, I just shake my head and move on. I guess I’m growing up.
Cheers.

Dove Bites Monday, Oct 20 2008

17 October 2008
Apparently “Boss’s Day” was celebrated last week here in the U.S. I had no idea. Other people did, though, and one of my bosses came around sharing the gift she had received from one of her employees. Dove chocolate candies. The amusing irony here, is that the boss is allergic to chocolate. Was there a statement in the gift one wonders? Or just painful ignorance? Anyway, Dove does this wonderful thing where they print sayings on the inside of the wrappers and apparently, they’ve recently started taking submissions.
This saying by one “Rachel” was on 3 of the 4 Dove bites I got:
Never Give Up...
I thought maybe it was some sort of harbinger, an omen if you will. The other wrapper was something horribly (in)appropriate like, “If you have diabetes, don’t eat chocolate.” Anyway, I didn’t “Give up…” but nor was tomorrow (the next day) better.
Cheers.
