Pub Guys Recording Session Thursday, Nov 5 2009

PubGuys Recording Session

27 October 2009

My day was spent with an eye on the clock, ’cause once again, I was going to be sure to attend the PubGuys recording session, and this time, I didn’t want to be late! I got my wish—in fact, I got chauffeur service! Kyle was able to stop and pick me up on his way on down Hwy 287 to the Firehouse Grill where today’s recording was to take place.

This is a great place, by the way . . . and a little too off-the-beaten path to be as well-patronized as it deserves.  It’s in Mansfield, in the same shopping center with the Home Goods and Marshalls store . . . right along Hwy 287.  Awesome food, huge selection of beers, (Rahr Octoberfest is on tap!) full bar, and great people!  Check it out.

It was a good session . . . made a little more special when the pub/restaurant owner came over to join the guys at the mics!

PF Chang Rails Tuesday, Dec 2 2008

26 November 2008
I’m not a big fan of Chinese food, but tonight I was in the mood of P.F. Chang. My wife, it turns out, had never been to one, so we found a local restaurant and went there for dinner.
PF Chang's
I had a nice Malbec with their Orange Beef dinner while she had something else entirely. The photo is of their ornamental separators with the bar and a bartender out of focus at the end.
Cheers.

Margarita Menu Friday, Nov 14 2008

13 November 2008
True to form when I called my wife to tell her I was on the way home, she replied with "Yay! I’m hungry." It’s faire season, so the cupboards are a bit bare, and it’s senseless to go buy a bunch of groceries that may or may not still be good by the time we return early next week. So, Chili’s it was. We actually were headed to our old haunt, No Frills Grill, but they were packed to the rafters – the NFL game I suppose (but really, who in our area cares about either the Jets or the Patriots) so we chose to go someplace a little more quiet (we had hoped, anyway – but that’s a completely different story). She ordered a margarita and dinner, I got a beer and dinner.

Pizza Perspective Monday, Sep 22 2008

20 September 2008
I watched some football this morning, then Marita Beth & went errand running. In the course of the errands, I managed to convince her that beer & pizza are a lovely combination and that we should have some. 🙂
This is that pizza
Pizza Perspective
which we acquired at BJ’s Brew Pub in Arlington. The pizza was quite tasty and I’ve always been fond of their Jeremiah Red. MB had a hefeweissen of some sort, then we shared their Oktoberfest lager. I told you beer & pizza was a good combination.
Cheers.

Remains of the Plantains Saturday, Jun 14 2008

13 June 2008
Friday the 13th. Rather than dwell on the fact that it’s Friday the 13th, and rather than comment on triskadecaphobia, I choose instead to write about the remains of the plantain. A dear friend of mine, after many years working with me, gave it all up to pursue a life-long dream. She is now the owner and primary chef of a Latin fusion restaurant in "downtown" Arlington, TX. Called Mi Terra (My land), it offers an impressive menu of various Latin cusines. On this day, this day the superstitious shun, my friend, Damaris, opened her restaurant to the world. Many of her co-workers and friends showed up to celebrate with her her opening-day lunch. Of course, with so many people showing up, she got stuck in the kitchen, but I am sure she didn’t mind overmuch. Here, I snapped a quick shot of the plantains and the delightful garlic/lemon dipping sauch before they disappeared completely.
Remains of the Plantain
Our hat’s off to you, Damaris, and we wish you ALL the very best! You can count on our frequent patronage.
Cheers.

A Lamp for Andy Monday, Sep 17 2007

14 September 2007
On the way home from work today, Marita Beth called. She was getting new glasses, but they wouldn't be ready for a little while yet. So, I told her to drive home, I'd pick her up, we'd grab a beer with Terrill and then go get her glasses. Terrill & I had planned this, sort of. We knew we had to try and get her out with me so he could give her a professionally printed, enlarged version of her excellent photograph. It made her cry. Unfortunately, immediately after the gifting and the joyous tears, Terrill received word that his little Boston Terrier Andy had to go back to the hospital. He'd had trouble breathing that morning and the vet's immediate diagnosis was an enlarged heart. That condition, apparently not uncommon in older, small-breed dogs, is treatable with medication and diet. So, Terrill left No Frills and headed home while MB and I finished our beer. After beer we went and got Marita Beth's really cute new glasses, then went to a Tex-Mex joint in Mansfield called Cha-Cha's. It's worth the trip. This lamp is on the side of the well-designed building that houses the eyeglasses place alongside a massage and acupuncture therapist.
The Lamp
I'm very saddened to report that Andy passed less than 36 hours later, but luckily he was surrounded by a loving family and seemed to be in little pain. R.I.P. Andy, you'll be missed.

Purple Kleenex Box Wednesday, Sep 12 2007

8 September 2007
As I've mentioned before I pay attention to the photo "assignments" that come my way via blogs & forums I subscribe to. Two of the three assignments I get each week are assigned on Friday while the third comes to me on Monday. This week's Friday assignments were Purple & Soft. It is the Wednesday after those two assignments came out, but I'm posting for that Saturday photo. This is Purple.
Purple Kleenex Box
I was driving through a parking lot in South Arlington and my eyes were drawn to the purple newspaper box and the purple lightposts just outside the Taco Bell. But, I wasn't overwhelmed with the composition opportunities. Then, but 30 feet way, someone had dropped an empty Kleenex box next to an abandoned Mexican restaurant. Aha. So, now we have a Purple Kleenex box as fulfillment for Assignment number one. I'm sure that I gathered many a look as I crawled around in the filthy parking lot looking for a good angle to shoot my Purple. I think I got it with this one. I like the overall arrangement and exectuion of the image, even though it is a photo of someone's refuse.
I threw the box in the trash. Couldn't have someone else taking a photo of a Purple Kleenex box, could I?
Cheers.

Maggie May’s Monday, Sep 10 2007

5 September 2007
The day started well enough, went rapidly downhill and then levelled out. It started raining in the morning then I got a call requiring an emergency side-trip before getting on my flight to LGA. No resolution was generated by my side trip, sadly, but there’s a certain satisfaction in knowing that I’ve done everything right. Now, I just need to follow up and ensure that the parties that can fix the problem do fix the problem. The flight was uneventful, and after a quick seat-shuffle, not even too uncomfortable. We (Eric, Terrill & myself) arrived at La Guardia airport where Lou picked us up. We then high-tailed (actually not so much with the high-tailing, the traffic was horrendous!) it to Flushing Bayside for dinner & drinks.
MaggieMays
This is Maggie May’s. An unassuming, but lovely pub with one of the most delightful barmaids I’ve seen in quite some time. Dawn (that was her name) was very witty and very on-the-spot. She even knew how to draw a good pint of Guinness! Anyway, the four of us finished up some hardware tinkering we had to do while we had our drinks. Then off to Bourbon Street for dinner. Bourbon Street is a N’awlins influenced restaurant across from Margaritas. I could have spent hours and hours and hours up & down the streets here. It reminded me of Nob Hill in Portland. The business trip was just starting.
Cheers.

The Tap-In Friday, Aug 24 2007

22 August 2007
How very little time it takes to get back to the common, the familiar, the mundane. I’ve only been home one day, yet after work, because there’s no one to go home to (dogs only slightly count on that front), I went to a bar with Terrill. I do this frequently for several reasons. I love the way it affords me an opportunity to wind down after yet another stressful day at work. I enjoy Terrill’s (and whoever else shows up) company. I like beer.
The Tap-In
This is the Tap-In. It’s in Grapevine. Not my normal stomping grounds, but Terrill had a meeting up North in the Grapevine/Southlake area and I went up there. It caused me no pain, and the Tap-In is a nice enough joint. I would prefer it much more if the cigars they sell next door weren’t allowed to be smoked. But, hey it’s a bar, right? Although rumour has it that Grapevine is about to go smoke-free. Maybe Ft. Worth would grow some balls and follow suit since they seem incapable of leading the way.
Cheers.

The Window Friday, Aug 24 2007

20 August 2007

How could we possibly top yesterday’s events? We tried. It was a late start to the day and when we finally did get moving, I was pretty famished. My only criteria was “someplace I’ve not been.” So, off we went for some, fairly decent, Tex-Mex at El Sarape in Kenosha. We were joined for sustenance by Shannon, Kelly & Joseph. A short shopping trip and a little bit of driving later, we found ourselves pretty near our ultimate destination for the day. Since we were a little early, we stopped by this German-looking…and named, placed, Gerhard’s. We were the only two in the restaurant so had the full attention of the bar-tender. Marita Beth was kind of beer’ed out, but I can almost always be talked into one. I had a delightful season brew from Berghoff’s and took this photo of the stained glass in the bar area. The Window
I hope to return there some day for dinner (the menu looked very inviting). From Gerhard’s we made our way a few blocks to Chad’s house for a house-warming party that was, once again, great fun and filled with fine food & friends. A batch of noshes & a gallery reading later, and we were both shattered and ready to head home, sadly. Tomorrow, I head home.
Cheers.
