Galvez Jetty Wednesday, Dec 10 2008

5 December 2008
Friday of Dickens on the Strand. Most years we’re already on the island and preparing for the Gingerbread Ball. This year, however, with the destruction that Ike brought with him, the ball didn’t happen so we went down a day later.
Also this year, we stayed at the Galvez rather than the Tremont which is still closed. Not as convenient as the Tremont is the Galvez, but just as lovely in different ways. I especially loved the view over the Gulf of Mexico we had from our room

Sign at the Tremont House Saturday, Dec 15 2007

3 December 2007
Always the hardest day of the Dickens yearly retreat; it's the day we all say goodbye and go our separate ways. Some of these folks won't be seen again until next Dickens; some just a few days. But, it's always a sad farewell full of much hugging and kissing. This morning as we were doing our pack-out dance, we realised that a critical photo had not been snapped during daylight. My wife took a photo but, it was dark and, sadly, the photo didn't turn out so very well. Since she maintains her posting so religiously we were able to find this out and correct the oversight.

As you look at the photo, in the upper right corner you can just make out a sign hanging in the window. That sign, seen here, is the one that Ginger got for me, Marita Beth had framed and then made a fabulous travelling case for. That travelling case allowed me to bring the sign with me which proudly proclaimed to anyone looking that that room was mine!
Cheers.

6 September 2007
What a day. What a very, very long – yet fulfilling – day. The four of us, Lou, Terrill, Eric & myself spent the entire day in work, debug, work some more mode. It was quite fulfilling and proved the validity of the trip. However, by the end of the day, I was completely knackered. Lou took us to a place called Carasello for fairly decent, if expensive, Italian food. Then it was back to the hotel for some late night comeraderie and expensive drinks. Then it was to bed for another early morning the next day. And nary a photo in the entire proceedings. So, we have this lovely photo of the parking lot lights through a filthy (!!) window.

Field O’Green Friday, Jun 8 2007

7 June 2007
Day three of week one in a 5-week study in corporate ineffectualness.
This is the Flagship University, a corporate hotel & convention center where I am holed up for 27+ hours a week right now.
Field o' Green
I couldn’t be bothered to take a better photo today even though when MB and I went out for dinner I did take my camera. I just couldn’t work up the necessary drive. I’m still sick and very weary. I’m not sleeping more than a couple of hours at a time due to nasty coughing/gagging fits and now I’m finding that many of my co-workers are coming down with some sort of crud. I certainly hope I wasn’t the catalyst, but I fear I am.
That’s all for now; I really can’t be bothered.
Cheers.

Yet Another Hotel Room Thursday, Apr 26 2007

17 April, 2007
Still catching up, but I am getting there if slowly. The 17th was a Tuesday; but unlike most Tuesdays that wind down with a trip to No Frills Grill for $1 beer and trivia, I instead got on an airplane and went to the East Coast—Philadelphia, in fact. I had to attend a meeting early enough on Wednesday that there were no flights in that I could catch. So, it was an overnight trip. Jill met us at the airport and we went to Champps for dinner and drinks before retiring to the hotel in downtown Philadelphia. I tried to take photos during the cab ride, but the cabbie didn’t stay still long enough for me to get a good capture of anything; and the cobblestone streets didn’t lend themselves to good movement photography either. So, instead I’m posting a photo of the interior of my Hilton room.
The bed was just as lumpy as it looks.  And the window looks out directly onto a parking lot; what a view!

That was my Tuesday.

Key West Sunset Ale Thursday, Feb 22 2007

15 February, 2007
Key West Sunset Ale
Last night at the hotel and I finally find a beer I enjoy. The Crowne Plaza Hotel has a decent bar with a decent, if very opinionated barkeep; however they’ve been out of Red Stripe & Fosters since I got here; nor do they carry any stouts or brown ales. Well, that is, until they brought in Key West Sunset Ale. Nothing particularly special about the brew other than the fact that it wasn’t yet-another-bottle-of-water-trying-to-pass-as-beer. Little to no aroma, and I drank it out of the bottle rather than poured into a glass so I can’t judge the head. A wonderfully light flavour that would suit me just perfect on a hot day in Miami (like it was). A far better choice than Miller or Budweiser and certainly palatable.
Hooray Beer.
Cheers.
