My Favourite Magpie Wednesday, Apr 30 2008

My wife is a magpie. Not literally of course, but she exhibits all the qualities of a magpie of the highest order. She is drawn to shiny, shiny things and she hoardes them. Sometimes she displays them, sometimes they sit in drawers waiting for the proper time to use. Others, that she loves a lot, she carries with her as she travels to faires & other events. This is such a lot.

It’s a closeup of one single pouch of her quite large jewelry roll. I love my magpie!

When I leave in the morning, I try very hard to spend a few moments with my pups. They love their frisbee catching play time with me. I can’t always do it, but I sure do try. When I fail in the morning, I sometimes try in the evening depending on available light.

‘Tia has the frisbee and is the controller of the game. Cormac (at the top of the photo) is the marshall and makes sure ‘Tia always brings the frisbee back to me. It’s an amusing dynamic.

A Knight in Spring Wednesday, Apr 30 2008

I owe Kyle an apology!  He came home from work on Monday, and almost immediately went back outside to take a photo.  He said the little suit of armour and the yellow lilies had caught his eye and would make a great photo.  Unfortunately, when he came in again, he was disappointed—the light was wrong, and he didn’t get the shot he wanted. 

So, today, I’m afraid I stole his idea.  I was working on Joe’s outfit, and got into sleeve-making only to realize I wasn’t going to have enough of one of my trims to complete the job.  Grrrr.   So, the first thing I did was to call my friend Stephen to see if he by any chance had any of this trim lying around (he didn’t!).  I didn’t want to waste time looking up a number, so I grabbed my cell phone and stepped outside the house to get a signal . . . the driveway isn’t good, but it’s better than the house.  While I was on the phone with him, I spotted the yellow flowers and remembered Kyle’s idea.  The light was perfect, and the day was beautiful, and I decided photography was a great method of procrastination as I dealt with the frustration over the trim. 

Every time Kyle and I shoot the same subject, the photos turn out totally different, and I think this one will be no exception.  Our methods, perspectives, and visions in our heads are different.   But, usually, it’s by accident—or rather, serendipity—that we end up shooting the same thing.  This time it was completely intentional on my part!  Sorry, baby!  <wink>  I love you!

I’m not sure exactly what caught her eye, but Artemis was intent on something above and behind, and she struck this pose and froze for just long enough for me to snap this photo.

“Monday Stuff” occupied practically my entire day—and the rest of the week will be spent almost nonstop in the workshop!  It’s beautiful weather outside—springtime in Texas.  And, I’m afraid I’m destined to miss another week of it.  Oh, well . . . it feels good to have my work be wanted.  So, work I will!

Brett at Mexican Inn Monday, Apr 28 2008

The day started off rainy & pretty darn cold for a Texas late-April day. But, by mid-afternoon it was as stunningly beautiful as could possibly be. I, personally, could not have asked for a better weather day. And, even my shop didn’t suffer as my sales for the day were actually up over last Sunday. Gotta love that. Gotta not love the fact that I didn’t take a single photo on the day. On the way home, MB & I got a page from Brett & Jill who had stopped at Mexican Inn. Although we had miles to go and much to do before we slept, the lure of a margarita was great and we succumbed to the temptation. Therefore, photo opportunity was afforded to me after all. This is Brett as taken from my new company-provided Palm Treo.

The camera in the phone obviously does not handle low-light situations very well. I’ll keep experimenting with it and emailing the results to Flickr.

Two on a Bench Monday, Apr 28 2008

Fourth weekend at Scarborough Faire. On this Saturday, we were graced by the presence of my dear Allyson. Beautiful, charming & talented, she brightened my shop for a good portion of the afternoon. In this photo she’s stringing some jewelry she had made for me to sell in East Wind Games. The shop manager, Marcus, is sitting with her as they both listen & laugh to Hey Nunnie Nunnie. It was a good day.

Bagatelle Beginnings Monday, Apr 28 2008

Another game-inspired post. This one about Bagatelle.
Bagatelle is an indoor game related to pool. Although sources vary on whom deserves credit for the first Bagatelle game, they do all agree that Bagatelle is most likely the result of attempting to move outdoor games, such as croquet & shuffleboard into the parlour. The earliest known Bagatelle-like tables seem to date from the 15th century and are very primitive in form and function. It wasn’t until the 17th century that the French narrowed the common billiards table and placed permanent pins on it that the game of Bagatelle became the game we know today . The game gained its name in 1777 (sources disagree on the exact date) when a party in honour of Louis XIV was held at the Chateau de Bagatelle by the Count of Artois. The highlight of this party was this splendid new game that the Count dubbed Bagatelle. The game is the precursor of our modern pinball & pachinko games and is played similarly. It is quite like pachinko in that you have only the initial strike with which to control your ball as there are no flippers like exist in pinball. However, it is more akin to pinball with it’s table-structure and gently inclined playing field (Pachinko has a vertical face). This version is a miniaturized version of that 1777 Bagatelle table where the cue stick has been replaced by a wooden spring-driven plunger and the ivory balls have been replaced by steel ball bearings.

Find a Bagatelle game and play it. It is great fun.

I’m more amused by this photo than anything else. This is a moving Marita Beth with a margarita. We went to Mexican Inn for some reason on this Thursday night only to discover that the restaurant closes at 9pm rather than the 10, 11 or even 12 that all the surrounding restaurants use as closing time. Oh well, I guess the business model works for them.
