Think Green

12 March 2008

Happy Birthday, John!

It’s that time of year, when I spend half the day on the phone, half the day sewing, half the day running errands, and the time left over on housework!  Get the picture?  I made a few minutes of time for housework today, ’cause I had a customer appointment this evening, and it was getting pretty cluttered in here.   It’s better now.  The fitting went well, the errands were fairly successful, and I’m working through my list of business that must be conducted by phone.  Each day, I can file another piece of paper or scratch something off my list.

My photo isn’t much—I finally repotted this beautiful pothos plant I successfully brought home from Bristol last summer.  I was amused to watch Kyle photograph this same plant tonight, only from a different angle.  Great minds . . .

Sad news today:  we learned about the death, at the age of only 52, of artist Dave Stevens.  Dave was perhaps best known as the creator of The Rocketeer—first in comic book format, and then on the silver screen.  His pin-up art, in the style of the forties, but with a more modern take, and with much more skill than anyone else—ever—is another hallmark of his talent.  His Bettie Page is one of the sexiest female characters to ever grace a page.  In fact, way back . . . in the way back time . . . I was inspired by Dave to recreate his Bettie Page.  I made a black and white vertically-striped, tight-fitting, off-the-shoulder top, wore a bright red, cocktail length, pencil skirt with a tulip flare at the bottom, hose with a seam and high, high heels.  My hair was shorter then, and I even had the bangs!  I was 36-24-36 and pulled off a pretty good Bettie!  Somewhere, there’s a cute photo of me like that, standing next to a giant promotional stand-up from The Rocketeer movie release party.

Dave lost a battle with leukemia and the comics and graphic art industries have lost a creative genius.  As one writer online put it, “the Rocketeer has blasted off!”  I promise you, I’ll be watching my DVD of The Rocketeer tomorrow!

New Trim for the Queen

11 March 2008

After the busy weekend, and then going and doing all day yesterday, today I spent all day at home.  Tomorrow I must get out and do some local errands, but today it felt good to stay at home.  My house and my laundry basket are grateful, too.

Tonight, I’ve been busily working on Shannon’s skirt repairs.  After two seasons of hard use, last year’s final weekend of three straight days of rain and mud were the final nail in the coffin of the beautiful Indian trim I’d used on the bottom of her purple skirt.  So, for 2008, the Queen gets new trim.  In fact, the whole bottom seven inches of her skirt will be brand new!  My photo is of that six-plus-yard purple cotton velvet skirt and all the new trims I’m using.
