Wanna Play?

17 October 2007

For a few minutes, almost every night, there’s a bit of an integrated playtime at our house.  No matter what the species—dog, cat, human—everybody gets in the act.  The dogs love their “bones” and chase ’round the living room playing their version of keepaway.  The humans love to get the bones and toss them willy nilly to whichever dog might get there first.  And the cat, aloof and above it all, loves to watch from the back or the arm of a chair, and occasionally swat at a tail as it goes by.  Sometimes, though, the dog attached to the tail will take notice of said swat and get more interested in the cat than in the bone.  That’s when it gets really interesting.  And very amusing.

Artemis will sometimes satisfy the dogs’ need to herd her, and run from one room to the next.  She’s small enough and fast enough to jump over them, or run under them to the safety of the bedroom.  And if she’d just stay there, that would be the end of it.  But, when she’s all wound up, she’ll run back out, and take up her elevated position again—ready to swat.  It can be quite the amusing game.

That’s the game we played tonight.  I guess it’s over now, but it was sure fun to watch while it lasted!

I had a delightful dinner with my friend Mark, and now, I must get back to work in the workshop.  I’m hoping not to be “still up” at 4 a.m. like I was today!
