The Texas Renaissance Festival officially has begun. Day one of many, and the crowds just aren’t here. At least that’s the story the picture tells. The reality is that just over 24 thousand folks paid their way into the faire grounds on opening day. That’s not a record, but it sure is impressive.

This photo was taken at nearly 18:30 so I’m guessing that the majority of the folk are either at the excellent Christophe the Insultor show, or finding a seat for the marvelous fireworks display. Either way, the photo doesn’t really show the sheer numbers of folk that came to play on this grossly hot & humid day. One down, many more to go.
Cheers.

Newlyweds

9 October 2007

Tuesday night at No Frills–my last one for a while, I fear.  I plan to finally return to my dance class beginning next week.  It has been far too long.

But, tonight, Kyle scooped me up on his way to meet Terrill.  I then took his car and ran my errands before returning to the bar.  The guys were deep in some problem or another that was work-related, both focused on Terrill’s laptop.  There is no way the higher management at American Airlines Cargo could possibly appreciate how much these two care, and give to their jobs.

While they were busy, I got my own laptop out and did some work on East Wind Games.  I never had a chance to touch any of that while I was away this week.  So, I was glad to re-focus a bit on it.  Like I’ve said before, if we just work a little on it each day, we’ll get it whipped into shape pretty quickly.

After the AA work was done, the three of us ordered food, and then, after Terrill headed home, Kyle and I joined Brett and Jill in the restaurant for some trivia.  After teasing them some more about not telling us they were planning to get married while they were in Hawaii, I decided a cute photo of them would be a good idea for the KRuMB.  So, here it is—a cute photo, indeed.  Again, Congratulations to the newlyweds.

Beautiful Destruction

8 October 2007

One weekend down, seven more to go.  We survived TRF’s opening weekend in terrible heat and humidity so high the sky couldn’t contain it, and it dripped on and off both days.  But, the crowds turned out, and the money seemed to be flowing.  We cannot complain too much.

I stayed overnight Sunday, and finished up my inventory, learned some basics enough to use the new version of Excel that comes with Vista (grrr . . .) and started my drive back home around 1 p.m.  I had a lovely chat with Shannon on the phone while I drove, which really helped the time pass.  Once home, I unloaded, unhitched the trailer, and took a very long shower.  When Kyle got home, he drew my attention to the pretty sunset and it is his inspiration that must be credited with my photo today.

At some point, during my absence from home, the web worms returned.  When I left on Wednesday, all was well.  Now, just a few days later, as I returned home and backed the trailer into the driveway, the box elder trees are even more bare than they were, and the webs have begun to burst with annoying caterpillars.

We had this crazy springtime invasion of web worms or tent caterpillars or whatever you want to call them.  No one I’ve talked to seems to know for sure what their proper name is.   But, our area had these things so bad, that all the stores were sold out of the chemicals needed to kill/control them.  So, despite the fact that we saw it happening, we were totally under seige by the time we were able to treat the trees and the world around them.  And not long after the treatments done by our neighbours and by us, they seemed to die and be gone.  But, now, they’re back again.

It seems they do not kill the trees (unless the tree is already weak and unhealthy) they just make them very unsightly.  But, the in-between stage that we’re in now, where the leaves are made into lace by the caterpillars’ non-stop eating, but haven’t yet fallen from the tree, is, as illustrated above, really rather lovely.  Especially when placed against the backdrop of a fabulous, post storm sunset.
