Flea Fur

14 May 2007

In Renaissance times, those who could possibly afford it, wore on their person, some bit of fur–usually that of a small weasel-type animal:  ermine, mink, etc.  The belief was, that by wearing the fur, one could be more assured of being free of infestations of fleas and the like, because the offending insects would be attracted off one’s own body and onto the fur.  These fur bits became know as “flea furs” or “vanity furs” and were often elaborately decorated and jewelled.

I know my photograph doesn’t do this little guy justice.  But, he is really an exquisite addition to my costume accessory collection.  Hand-beaded and decorated by our own Miss Allyson Giesen of Persimmon Jewelry, this beautiful thing was gifted to me in honour of my most recent natal day celebration.  Allyson really did an amazing job with it!  It is trimmed in gold filigree findings, pearls and garnet beads.  And I couldn’t love it more!

Allyson:  there are more shots of it if you follow the link to flickr.  Enjoy.

Chess Players

~KR (6 May, 2007)

I have encouraged Kyle to post the photos from the days he’s behind in blogging, with the knowledge that we can, either one of us, go back and write about them, later.  Unfortunately, I cannot help with the journalling when the photo is of something I don’t even recognize, or have never seen.  But on this one, I’m safe!

On any given faire day at Scarborough, one can find this gentleman, playing chess (and probably winning) in front of our East Wind Games shoppe.  In this photo, he is paired with a young man who looks very serious about the game.  In the background, you can see the Pendragon Costumes shoppe where I work!

Wow!  What an amazing photo of Paul!  I don’t think I’ve ever taken such a close-up photo of anybody—I think I’d be afraid to . . . hmmm  . . I guess I’d better get over that.  ‘Cause this is awesome!  Well done, Kyle!

Powerlines on My Street

Kyle says this cluster-**** of poles and wires is right down the street from where we live!  I can honestly say, I’ve never noticed it!  Not pretty, but it makes for an interesting photo.

Sunset Over 287 Monday, May 14 2007

Sunset over 287

13 May 2007

What a weekend!  The muggiest, most miserable weekend so far.  The worst weekend of sales so far.  The best Saturday night gathering so far.   Dad from San Antonio; Allyson from Houston; Maron and Meredith and their beautiful boys from Chicago; Chad Fabulous from Kenosha.  All these things combined to make for a fun, but exhausting weekend.

As Kyle and I and the dogs drove home—no group dinner tonight, we were too tired—I was so impressed with the beauty of the sunset, I had to try to photograph it.  Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do that well.  So, I was disappointed with my pictures, and this is the best of them.  Someday, I’ll be able to make the picture in my head actually happen!

Yay Allyson! Monday, May 14 2007

Yay Allyson!

12 May 2007

After the slowest, hottest, muggiest day of the faire season so far, closing cannon was just the beginning for us.  There was a wild flurry of activity while we packed down the Pendragon Costumes product like we always do at night, and set up for our Wine and Cheese Party and Trunk Show for Allyson.  I’ve written before about Allyson’s beautiful jewelry and her little company called Persimmon Jewelry.  She and I had plotted and planned, since before faire started, to find a time for her to be able to show her friends at Scarborough (and their friends!) her work.  Typically, she would wear something she’d made to faire and have people comment on it, until someone would buy it off her neck!  Or, sometimes, she’d bring three or four pieces and show them around until they sold.  But, we wanted an opportunity to see all of her currently available designs at once, and have our pick!  So, a Trunk Show was the answer.

We picked a weekend when Allyson could drive up from Houston, and when there wasn’t a whole lot going on at faire, and I started to get the word out.  Emails, a few flyers and lots of word of mouth, resulted in a great turnout for our party.  I bought about eight bottles of wine (and a decent little boxed wine as a back-up), five boxes of crackers, and eleven different varieties of cheese.  I even made little signs indicating the name of each cheese.  A couple of other folks brought wine, too–including Debbie, who makes her own fabulous White Zinfandel.  By about eight o’clock or so, we were ready—we had the booth transformed into an almost elegant setting for a jewelry show.  The photo above, of Allyson and her friend Brittany, was taken at about eight-fifteen.  By 8:30, our guests were arriving, and by 9:30, we had a pretty big crowd!  I was delighted with the number of friends that showed up, and even more delighted to see them grooving on Allyson’s work!

At the end of the night, we had six empty bottles of wine, six little zippy bags of cheese chunks, and about half the jewelry we started with!  ”Yay!” to a fun party; “yay!” to a successful trunk show; and “yay!” Allyson!

Kyle’s dad was with us on Saturday, too!  Between Nonie’s birthday and Mother’s Day, Mum being in Virginia with KellyeBeth, and the need to just get the he** out of Dodge, he drove north for the weekend and enjoyed the faire on Saturday.  Of course, I think it was the knowledge of a Wine and Cheese Party on Saturday night, that really solidified his travel plans!  ;-)  And, thanks Dad, for cutting all that cheese into cubes for me!
